This approach is evident in every frame.

The film opens on a “breathtaking, sun-drenched pastoral vista”. Nestled in a landscape of rolling green hills and sparkling rivers is a majestic castle, rendered not as a grim fortress, but as an welcoming home built from warm, honey-toned limestone. The Narrative Unfolds: A Story of Curses, Princesses, and a Fateful Kiss
For those new to the tale or wishing to be reminded of its magic, “Sleeping Beauty” tells the story of Princess Briar Rose. Cursed at her christening by a malevolent fairy, she is destined to prick her finger on a spinning wheel on her birthday and fall into a death-like slumber.
To protect her, the good fairies hide the princess away. But destiny cannot be avoided. The curse is fulfilled, and the entire kingdom slumbers with her, encased in thorns, awaiting a brave prince whose kiss of true love can break the spell.
Our screenplay takes the time to delve into the emotional heart of the story, allowing each character’s joy and sorrow to resonate deeply.
A Kingdom’s Joyful Wish
The film opens not with a princess, but with a profound wish. We first meet the kind King and gentle Queen, who rule a “happy kingdom, filled with laughter and sunshine”. Yet, they carry a “gentle longing deep within their hearts” for a child. We show seasons changing outside the castle windows—”spring blossoms turn to summer fullness, then autumn leaves, then winter snow”—to emphasize the many years they spent hoping.
Their wish is so deeply felt that when the “glorious morning” finally arrives, announcing that the Queen is expecting a child, the news spreads “like wildfire through the kingdom”. The entire realm shares in their happiness, unfurling bright banners and decorating the streets with flowers. This foundation of shared love and longing makes the birth of Princess Briar Rose—named because she was as “lovely and precious as the most beautiful flower in the royal gardens”—a truly momentous occasion for all.
The Christening: Blessings and a Fateful Shadow
The christening feast is a spectacle of “opulent, festive, anticipatory grandeur”. The Grand Hall is adorned with tapestries depicting heroic legends, and tables groan under the weight of towering cakes and roasted pheasant. The most honored guests are the Wise Women of the realm, invited to bestow their blessings upon the child.
One by one, eleven of them approach the cradle, granting magical gifts of Beauty, Virtue, Song, Wit, and Grace. Each blessing is visualized with a distinct, shimmering light—”a soft, shimmering golden light, like captured sunlight” for beauty, and “a gentle, green light, like sunlight filtering through leaves” for virtue—creating a symphony of gentle magic.
But a chilling shadow falls as the twelfth Wise Woman arrives—uninvited, forgotten because the King possessed only eleven of the special golden dinner plates reserved for such guests. Her face is a “map of wrinkles,” holding not pure malice, but a “profound sadness and a flicker of anger” from being slighted. Ignoring the King’s frantic apologies, she delivers her chilling “gift”:
Twelfth Wise Woman: “My gift to the Princess Briar Rose is this: On her fifteenth birthday… she shall prick her finger upon the spindle of a spinning wheel! And in that very moment… she shall fall down… as if DEAD!”
The curse shatters the joy of the feast. A “collective cry of horror” erupts from the guests, and the Queen collapses into the King’s arms, sobbing uncontrollably.
A Glimmer of Hope & A Century of Slumber
Just as despair consumes the court, the final, kind Wise Woman steps forward. She does not possess the power to “completely undo the curse,” but she can soften its terrible finality. Her voice, “gentle, reassuring, full of empathy,” alters the prophecy:
Kind Wise Woman: “She shall not die. Instead of death, the Princess Briar Rose will fall into a deep, profound sleep… A slumber so deep that nothing will disturb her. And this sleep shall last for one hundred years.”
She foretells that after a century, a Prince of “courage and noble heart” will come to awaken her. Driven by this fragile hope, the King issues a desperate decree: every spinning wheel and spindle in the kingdom is to be destroyed in great bonfires.
For fifteen years, it seems the plan has worked. Briar Rose blossoms into a lovely young maiden. But on her fateful fifteenth birthday, with her parents away, she explores a forgotten tower and discovers the very last spinning wheel in the kingdom. Fascinated, she begs to try it. In her excitement, her hand slips, and the sharp spindle pricks her finger.
The curse is fulfilled. Briar Rose falls into a deep sleep, and a gentle wave of slumber spreads from the tower, putting the entire castle and all within it into a suspended animation, ensuring the princess will not wake up alone a century later. Outside, a magical hedge of “impenetrable, living thorns” grows with unnatural speed, completely hiding the castle from the world.
The Awakening
After a hundred years, the legend of “Sleeping Beauty” is a whispered tale. A kind and courageous Prince from a neighboring kingdom, known for his compassionate heart, hears the story and feels an irresistible pull to find the lost princess. He is a character defined by thoughtfulness, even shown letting a stag go free during a hunt out of respect for nature.
When he arrives at the Thorn Hedge on the day the hundred years are complete, it miraculously parts for him, bursting into beautiful wild roses to form a welcoming archway. He walks through a castle frozen in time, a “silent, poignant tableau of a world interrupted,” where everything is covered in a century’s dust. He finds the princess, preserved in her youthful beauty, and, moved by deep compassion, bestows a gentle, respectful kiss.
At his touch, the spell shatters. Briar Rose awakens, and with her, the entire castle roars back to life in a joyous, chaotic symphony of sound and movement. The reunion between Briar Rose and her overjoyed parents is a moment of pure, overwhelming emotion. A true and tender affection blossoms between the princess and her valiant prince, culminating in a magnificent wedding and a future where they live, as all the best fairytales promise, happily ever after.
